LIGHTHOUSE XII
NEWPORT HARBOR (GOAT ISLAND) LIGHT
Order No. 096
HISTORY: At least three different lighthouses have
stood on Newport’s Goat Island. The most recent, completed during
the Civil War is a 35’ octagonal granite structure. It was established
1824 and first lit in 1842. The tower now stands on a granite foundation
that is part of the breakwater on which it was originally built.
In 2000 the Coast Guard leased the tower to the American Lighthouse
Foundation for preservation. The keeper’s quarters were demolished
in 1923 after being damaged when a U. S. World War I vintage submarine
rammed it.
The lighthouse is still operational. The original fourth-order
Fresnel lens has been replaced with a 250 mm optic. The lighthouse
is accessible by walking through the Hyatt Regency, Newport hotel.
The site is open to the public although the tower is closed.
STITCHING INFORMATION: Stitch count: 180
stitches wide x 148 high. Our model was stitched on a 16"
x 14" piece of white 18 count AIDA fabric. To use a different
type of fabric or different AIDA sized fabric, give the stitch count
to your fabric store and they will help you select the correct amount
of fabric to complete this design. Our threads were carefully chosen
to depict the actual colors of the lighthouse to give it the most
realistic appearance possible.
