LIGHTHOUSE X
"BIG RED"
HOLLAND HARBOR SOUTH PIERHEAD
LIGHTHOUSE, MICHIGAN
Order No. 089
HISTORY: "Big Red" is located on
Black Lake/Lake Michigan near Holland. The lighthouse was first
operated in 1936. It was a small, square wooden structure erected
in 1872. In 1880 the lighthouse service installed a new light atop
a metal pole in a protective cage. It was automated in 1970. It
was constructed of wood and sits on a pier. The red light tower
sits on top of the bright red dwelling—painted red for better visibility.
In 1907 the brick keepers dwelling was covered with steel plating.
The tower is 32’ high and the fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed
in 1907. It presently uses a 250mm lens. The original lens was given
to the Holland Museum. The keeper’s quarters are, naturally, part
of the main building. The U. S. Coast Guard leases this lighthouse
to the Holland Harbor Historical Lighthouse Commission as the light
is an active aid to navigation in the state park. "Big Red"
is still operational and open to the public.
STITCHING INFORMATION:Stitch count:
196 stitches wide x 129 high. Our sample design was stitched
on a 17" x 13" piece of 18-count white AIDA fabric. To
use a different type of fabric or different AIDA sized fabric, give
the stitch count to your fabric store and they will help you select
the correct amount of fabric to complete this design. Our threads
were carefully chosen to depict the actual colors of the lighthouse
to give it the most realistic appearance possible.
