LIGHTHOUSE VI
NUBBLE LIGHTHOUSE (CAPE NEDDICK
LIGHTHOUSE), ME
Order No. 067
HISTORY: The Cape Neddick Lighthouse stands on Nubble
Island about 200 yards off Cape Neddick Point near the town of York,
Maine. This lighthouse is inaccessible but the nearby park offers
ample parking and a welcome center. This light is often called Nubble
Light because of the barren rocky island (a nubble) that holds it.
Nubble light was first established in 1879 although plans had been
in the works since 1837. The tower is lined with brick and sheathed
with cast-iron. It stands 41 feet tall but the light is 88 feet
above sea level because of the additional height of the steep rocky
island on which it is located. A wood frame residence connects to
the tower by a covered walkway.
The extreme winter cold would cause the flow of lamp oil to the
kerosene vapor lamp to thicken. This problem was solved in 1938
when the lamp was electrified. The fourth-order Fresnel lens installed
in 1879 was damaged in 1938 by an explosion and the new fourth-order
one was manufactured in 1891. It was automated in 1987. The lighthouse
is still an active aid to nativation.
STITCHING INFORMATION: Stitch count: 176 stitches
wide x 123 high. Our model was stitched on a 15" x 12"
piece of white 18-count AIDA fabric. To use a different type of
fabric or different AIDA sized fabric, give the stitch count to
your fabric store and they will help you select the correct amount
of fabric to complete this design. Our threads were carefully chosen
to depict the actual colors of the lighthouse to give it the most
realistic appearance possible.
