ASSATEAGUE ISLAND LIGHT, VA
ORDER NO. 205
Lighthouse XLIV
HISTORY: The first 45-foot light was
built in 1833. It was neither high enough nor bright enough to stop
vessels from running up on the hazardous shoals extending from the
island. The Lighthouse Board voted to upgrade the light in 1850
but the Civil War interrupted the project. The light was eventually
replaced with the present red and white-banded conical brick tower
in 1867. It was equipped with a first order Fresnel lens but an
aero-marine beacon replaced this when the station was automated
in 1967. This light is still operational and was automated in 1965.
The tower is now 142 ft. high. It is a noted landmark in the Chincoteague
National Wildlife Refuge and is open to the public..
