Boston Harbor Light Station,
MA
Order No. 189
Boston Harbor Light Station has been located on Little Brewster
Island in
Boston Harbor since 1716. It was the first lighthouse in America!
The
British blew it up in 1776 when George Washington made them leave
Massachusetts. A new tower was built incorporating some of the old
structure and was finished in 1783. The light station was run by
the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1790 when it was turned over
to the
United States. The light station has changed since with the addition
of an
another 14 feet added to the tower, an outside staircase plus steel
bands to
reinforce the tower. The keeper darkened his lamps during the War
of 1812
so as not to assist the British and the light was again extinguished
during
World War II. A cannon was the fog signal until a bell replaced
it in 1851.
The light was automated in 1998 and it is still an active aid to
navigation.
