COLCHESTER REEF LIGHTHOUSE, VT
Order No. 181
ABOUT: Colchester light was built in
1871 at a cost of $20,00 when lumber transportation was at its peak
on Lake Champlain. There were dangerous shoals near the Colchester
Point shore. The foundation was damaged several times by severe
storms and crushing ice flows. The lighthouse was a second empire
style with a fixed red light from a sixth-order Fresnel lens. Supplies
were brought to this lonely dwelling once a year by a lighthouse
tender out of New York. In 1933 an automated buoy light replaced
the lighthouse. However, in 1952, Mrs. J. Watson Webb, collector
of New England memorabilia and founder of the Shelburne Museum,
purchased the lighthouse to add to her collection. The structure
was disassembled and reerected on the grounds of the museum. The
lighthouse can be visited on the museum grounds
