FORT NIAGARA LIGHT, NY
Lighthouse XLV
ORDER NO. 206
HISTORY: Our design is based on the third
lighthouse at Fort Niagara (1872). The first light was built by
the British in 1781 after they had captured Fort Niagara toward
the end of the French and Indian War. It was a very important navigational
light at the juncture of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Following
the American Revolution, the U. S. Army controlled the fort and
the lighthouse was dismantled around 1803. In 1823 a new wooden
tower was built. Finally in 1872 a new fifty-foot octagonal stone
tower replaced the wooden one. It was taller and constructed just
south of the actual fort. The lighthouse is part of the Old Fort
Niagara National Historic Landmark. It is open to the public as
well as the wonderful restored fort where you can visit the buildings
and see enactments.
