MONTAUK LIGHTHOUSE, NY
Order No. 178
ABOUT: It took nearly 4 years to build
Montauk Lighthouse, located on Turtle Hill, the eastern most point
of Long Island. It was first lit in 1797 having been ordered by
George Washington. Montauk is the 4th oldest active light in America.
In 1860 the tower height was raised so the focal plane is 168 feet.
The light is still operational and was automated in 1987. It originally
used 13 whale oil lamps but the present DCB-224 lens was installed
in 1987. There was a 3-1/2 order lens used between 1904-1987 which
is now on display in the museum. The existing keepers quarters were
converted to a barn in 18860. The original construction was a colonial
building, 2 stories, made of brick. It is open to the public.
