NEW CANAL LIGHTHOUSE
Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana
Order No. 154
HISTORY: The first New Canal lighthouse
was constructed in 1839 but after 4 years, the lower timbers rotted.
Renovations were made in 1853 and eventually a new square, one-story
structure supported by iron pilings was completed 2 years later.
It originally held a 4th order Fresnel lens. Its present optic is
190mm.
In 1880 a large yacht club was built northwest of the tower and
it partially obscured the light. The lighthouse was then rebuilt
into a two-story structure over the old screwpiles. This raised
the focal plane another 16 feet high. It was activated in 1890.
The New Canal Station just might hold the record for having the
most female keepers. No fewer than 5 women served at the station,
most of whom took over when their keeper husbands died.
The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation located at what
is now Lakefront Park. The Coast Guard has run the lighthouse since
the 1960s. It is open to the public.
