PORTLAND BREAKWATER LIGHT, ME
Lighthouse XLVI
ORDER NO. 208
HISTORY:The original tower
measured 72 from base to lantern deck and was lit with 16
whale oiol lamps. It was first lit in 1791. By 1864 a 4th order
Fresnel lesns and a cast iron staircase were installed. The lens
was later replaced with a 2nd order and a portion of it can still
be seen in the tower. The light was automated in 1989. The tower
is white with black trim and is made up of rubble stone with a brick
lining. The tower other buildings including a museum and gift shop
are open to the public. The lighthouse is now the property of the
Town of Cape Elizabeth and the United States Coast Guard maintains
the actual light and fog signal. (notes from the Museum Guidebook,
