SODUS POINT LIGHT, NY
ORDER NO. 212
HISTORY:Sodus Bay was long considered
an excellent location for exporting products such as grain, lumber
and coal from New York and Pennsylvania to Lake Ontario. The first
lighthouse built in 1824 fell into disrepair during the Civil War
and was replaced. The new tower was constructed and first lit in
1871. The new 45 tower is built of cast iron and concrete
has a 3-1/2 order Fresnel lens. Materials from the original tower
were used to build a 70 jetty. The Sodus Bay Historical Society
maintains the lighthouse for tours. The keepers residence
houses a museum, gift shop and library.
