LIGHTHOUSE XXIV
ST. AUGUSTINE LIGHTHOUSE
ANASTASIA ISLAND, FLORIDA
Order No. 139
HISTORY: Our design is of the second
St. Augustine lighthouse as the first one, built by the Spanish
in 1737, was washed out to sea during an 1880 storm. That light
had been used by the British from 1763-1784 and then America after
1821. At that time, St. Augustine was the principle port.
The present lighthouse was first lit in 1874 and it is still operational.
It is made of brick with black and white spiral bands and has a
red lantern. Some say it resembles a huge barberpole. The tower
is attached to a storage building. The tower is 165 high and has
a first order Fresnel lens that was installed in 1874. This light
could be seen for 24 miles and has a fixed and flashing light.
The keepers quarters were built in 1876. It is a 2-story
Victorian duplex made of brick and wood. This dwelling now contains
a museum, theatre and bookstore.
St. Augustine Lighthouse continues to be an active aid to navigation.
It is open to the public.
