TLIGHTHOUSE XXXI
Yaquina Head Light, Oregon.
Order No. 153
HISTORY: This lighthouse is located 3 miles north of the Yaquina Bay entrance. It is near the city of Newport. It was established in 1873 and it is Oregon’s tallest tower (93 feet). The light is still operational and tours are available through the Bureau of Land Management who is now responsible for the lighthouse.
It took about one year and over 370,000 bricks to construct this lighthouse. It is a white tower with a green lantern and red dome. The light keeper’s house was destroyed but other outbuildings still remain. When it first opened, the oil burning fixed white light was displayed from sunset to sunrise. Today, the first order Fresnel lens runs on electricity and flashes 24 hours a day. This original lens is still in operation and the lighthouse continues to be an active aid to navigation.
