Silent Night
Order No. 160
On Christmas Eve, 1818, in a little church in Austria, the organ
was out of order. The assistant pastor, Joseph Mohr, thought there
should still be special music for their Christmas service so he
wrote the words to Silent Night. He gave them to the village schoolmaster,
Franz Gruber, who was also the church organist. Franz returned the
verses, set for two solo voices, chorus and guitar on the same day.
That evening the most widely loved Christmas song in the world was
heard for the first time.
